Why there is a new fish in your neighborhood

Improper disposal of household hazardous wastes into storm drains can seriously damage the water quality and environment of ___________ (your community or town). Storm drains are commonly misused for the disposal of paint, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, and other wastes. In addition, each time it rains water runoff carries street litter, yard debris, pet wastes and other pollutants into storm drains. Unfortunately, storm drains do not purify and remove these materials, but often discharge them directly into nearby streams, rivers, lakes, or even sinkholes, which are conduits to groundwater. The "non-point source pollution" is a significant source of contamination of New Jersey’s water resources.

In order to protect our water resources, members of ____________(group’s name) are labeling storm drains with a stencil reading "Dump No Waste, Drains to ________ Stream" and the image of a fish. The stenciled message will remind us that storm drains should never be used to dispose of household hazardous wastes.

____________(group’s name) of the ____________(group’s affiliation) are sponsoring the Storm Drain Stenciling Project in ____________(your community or town) to protect and preserve our water quality. ____________and ____________, in our community, have contributed to this Project.

Please tell your neighbors about the storm drain stencil and its message to help us protect our precious water resources. For more information you can contact_______________. Thank you for your assistance.
