'Spring into the Swamp' in April With GSWA, Kings, Recorder Papers

In partnership with Kings Super Markets and the Recorder Community Newspapers, GSWA is planning a month-long program in April to celebrate the recreational and educational resources within the Great Swamp watershed.

Under the theme "Spring into the Swamp," the program will include a variety of public activities and events in the watershed staged by the many environmental organizations located there.

In addition, a number of special events are slated for those Kings stores located near the watershed.   These may include exhibits of nature photographs; displays of children's artwork; a special drawing for a free Kings "shopping spree"; and in-person presentations - for example, demonstrations of colonial-era cooking by the staff of the Morristown National Historical Park (Jockey Hollow).

"We're delighted to be helping to showcase the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and its surrounding watershed," said Cheryl Good, Kings Manager of Community Relations.   "With several  stores serving the towns in and near the watershed, we're committed to preserving the quality of life in the area."

Commented Recorder Community Newspapers Co-Publisher and Executive Editor Elizabeth K. Parker: "We look forward to joining this partnership in promoting the variety of watershed-based activities available to the public.  The Watershed Association is working to protect a national treasure envisioned and created by a generation of residents before us.  Now it is our responsibility to support and protect it."

GSWA Executive Director Julia M. Somers thanked Kings and the Recorder Publishing Co. for their support, adding: "Partnerships like this can really heighten public awareness of the value of preserved lands, especially in the face of accelerating suburban sprawl."

As Across the Watershed went to press in January, times and locations of other events and activities were still in the planning stages. A printed, month-long calendar of events should be ready for wide public distribution in March.
