GSWA Mourns the Loss of Cary B. Cassa

Great Swamp Watershed Association notes with sadness the loss of an extraordinary lady. On March 25, 2001, Cary B. Cassa of Chatham Township passed away.

Born in Springfield, Missouri, she moved to New Jersey upon her marriage to David G. C. Cassa. Raised on a farm, she was an ardent conservationist and a devoted steward of the land. She and David settled on a 5-acre property on Fairmount Avenue in Chatham Township at the very edge of the Swamp. They resisted the approaches of developers over many years, and in 1995 donated their house and property to the Great Swamp Watershed Association, making possible the creation of our endowment fund. GSWA now holds a conservation easement on a portion of the property.

Cary was unfailingly, warm, friendly, and thoughtful of others. Her petite and ladylike exterior belied a woman of fierce principal and sharp curiosity with a deep devotion to her family. She is survived by her son George, who is a GSWA Trustee and chair of the Local Issues Committee; her daughter, Anne Parsekian, who is a member of the Local Issues Committee; and her daughter Mary Rose Cassa, of San Francisco, who is a GSWA member.

She will be sorely missed.
