Map of Bernards Township, NJ

Bernards Township’s definition of open space (from the municipal Master Plan): According to Township Mayor John Malay, open space is defined as “vacant” or “underutilized” land.

Annual open space tax: $.04 per $100 of assessed land. In 2005, this generated $2.562 million.

Acres of land preserved with open space funds: Since the municipal open space tax’s institution, 470 acres of land have been preserved.

Recent developments:

  • In accordance with its Master Plan, Bernards Township has a list of 50-60 parcels of land that the municipality aims to acquire for open space preservation over the next several years.
  • Since the institution of the Highlands Act, a major concern has been the high cost per acre of land. The higher the cost of land, the more challenging it is for the Township to buy up land before developers do.
