Map of Bernardsville, NJ

Bernardsville’s definition of open space (from the municipal Master Plan): Bernardsville’s open space tax was adopted about 7 years ago, and open space in the borough is defined as “land or water, unimproved or improved, for passive public use, whereas recreation, playfields, and parkland are devoted to more formal and active public use.”

Annual open space tax: $.02 per $100 of assessed land.

Acres of land preserved with open space funds:

  • Total municipal open space: 136.5 acres
  • Total county open space (Somerset County Park Commission): 98.7 acres
  • Total federal open space (Jockey Hollow): 191.3 acres
  • Total private open space (including Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary): 254.0 acres

Recent developments:

  • The Great Swamp Greenway is a project designed by GSWA in 1998, in which 150-foot buffer zones would be created along all stream corridors which feed into the Passaic River. Since Bernardsville contains a few tributaries of the Passaic, the borough has been looking into creating these greenways.
