Chatham Township’s definition of open space: The principal purpose of open space funds is for land preservation (rather than historic preservation, etc.) as well as “for the development and maintenance of municipal properties for active and passive recreation.”
- Because of the use of “active and passive,” there is a concern that open space money could be used for active recreation (i.e. tennis court resurfacing, lighting for ball fields, etc.).
- Unlike other communities, Chatham Township does not allow open space money to be devoted to historic preservation.
Annual open space tax: $.02 per $100 (up from $.01 in 1999), which brings in about $500,000 a year.
Recent developments:
- Chatham Township recently purchased open space on Woodland Road, bought with Green Acres, county, and municipal money. It was bought for active and passive recreation, but it was determined that much of the tract was made up of wetlands.
- The township also has been trying to purchase land along the area that will eventually be a greenway. In 1998, this region was put in the Master Plan in order to look at the greenway from an engineering perspective.
