Mendham Township’s definition of open space (from the municipal Master Plan): “land containing or impacting high-quality environmentally sensitive wetlands, steams, and aquifers, natural and forested areas, and by acquiring lands containing features important to the Township’s rural/historic character.”

Annual open space tax: $.04 per $100 of assessed land, which was passed in a referendum in 1993.

Acres of land preserved with open space funds:

  • Township Owned Open Space Parks and Protected Lands: 1,447.79 acres (about 7.5%)
  • U.S. Government: 22.00 acres
  • Morris County: 830.29 acres
  • Protected Private and Institutional Open Space: 634.87 acres
  • Other Private and Institutional Open Space: 337.94 acres
  • Total area of open space: 3,272.89 acres (28.6% of total area)

Recent developments:

  • Clyde Potts reservoir — This parcel was recently preserved. Since property values were strong but property taxes were low at the time of purchase, a required sum of $6,198,667 was needed to buy development rights to the reservoir property (along with two smaller properties that were necessary to protect the watershed).
