Morris County’s definition of open space: The Morris County Preservation Trust was formed in 1992 by the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and it defined open space as land that remains vacant, undeveloped, and/or affects the county’s drinking water sources.

Annual county open space tax: $.045 per $100 of assessed land, which could total nearly $40 million dollars in 2006.

Morris County Preservation Trust Fund is divided into the following areas:

  • 20% goes to the Morris County Park Commission
  • 5% goes to Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA)
  • 25% goes to Morris County Agriculture Development Board (for farmland preservation)
  • 25% goes to municipal and/or qualified charitable conservancies for open space projects
  • 20% are allotted for discretionary projects within the above categories
  • 5% is set aside for ancillary costs associated with land preservation

Acres of land preserved with open space funds: Since 1992, 19,000 acres have been acquired or earmarked for acquisition by the county
