Morristown’s definition of open space: Because there is no formal open space committee in Morristown, the definition of open space is determined as the county sees fit. According to Morris County, open space can be defined as “parkland or green spaces, …ecologically sensitive areas, …or…areas of scenic, historic, or cultural value.”

Annual open space tax: None. All funds come from the county, Green Acres, and private trusts.

Acres of land preserved with open space funds:

  • In 2000, the Morris County Preservation Trust acquired .61 acres on Martin Luther King Avenue at a cost of $265,000
  • In 1998, the MCPT acquired 1.82 acres on Cory Road in Historic Speedwell for $250,000.

Recent developments:

  • In January of 2006, the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders decided to keep the county open space tax at the same rate as in 2005. It is currently at $.45 per $100 of assessed land.
