Somerset County, New Jersey

Somerset County’s definition of open space (from the Somerset County Policy and Procedures Manual): Money goes to “lands and structures for parks, open space, natural areas, ecological and biological study, forests, water reserves, wildlife preserves, fishing, hunting, camping, boating, winter sports, or similar uses for either public recreation or conservation of natural resources, or both.”

Annual county open space tax: $.03 per $100 of assessed land (in addition to municipal tax).

Acres of land preserved with open space funds: Since 1995, more than $10 million have been contributed to preserving more than 2100 acres of open space in the county.
