"Do The Swamp Thing" Passport Due
"Do The Swamp Thing 2002," a month-long celebration of family activities in and around the Great Swamp, enters its final weekend with outstanding events throughout the region. This is the last weekend to get your "Passport to Win" stamped to enter the drawing.
"Passport to Win" is available at event sites throughout the watershed and at the Kings Super Market in Morristown. Anyone interested in the prize drawing is encouraged to get their "passport" stamped at any of the swamp sites throughout the promotion. With a minimum of two stamps, participants would then send their passport to the Watershed Association for the special drawing to be held later in May. First prize is a one-minute shopping spree at Kings, second prize is a Pentax camera donated by Madison Camera Shop, and third prize is a pair of Nikon "naturalist" binoculars, donated by NJ Audubon Society. Passports must be postmarked by May 22 to be eligible for the prize drawing.
On Saturday, May 18, the Great Swamp Watershed Association is hosting a nature talk on the wide variety of tracks that animals (rabbits, bears, frogs, etc.) make. Children age 6-12 are invited to create an ink project with stamps that make animal tracks. The Animal Tracking Art Project will be held at the Bernardsville Library on Anderson Hill Road from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Athough the event is free, reservations are required. Call 973-966-1900 for more information.
On the 18th and 19th from 11:00 a.m.-4 p.m. visit The Encampment at the Wick Farm in Jockey Hollow. Be surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of the Revolutionary War recruitment talk, participate in court martial, learn about cooking over a fire and observe the troops drilling with their muskets. Call 973-539-2016.
Also on the 18th, from 7-9 p.m., Somerset County Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge is hosting a class entitled "Basically Bats." The class will include their famous bat quiz, slide show and lecture about bat ecology, as well as a field walk to look for the elusive nocturnal creatures. 908-766-2489.
Visit the Morris County Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham for a presentation about Whales and the Environment with Diana Dove. Held on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m., bring the family to learn about whales and other marine life that lives in our oceans and how they are affected by humans and how we can help them. 973-635-6629.
