Watershed Association Continues Nature Events Into September
The Great Swamp Watershed Association, headquartered in Harding Township, continues to provide members and
non-members alike with a September menu of outdoor nature fun. Combine back to school with back to Great Swamp!
Secret Places of the Watershed - A Natural History Hike, August 28th
The Watershed Association owns 50 acres in Harding Township, which they maintain as the Conservation Management area.
This forested wetland contains vernal pools, streams and woodland with wildflowers and wildlife aplenty.
Participants will take a stroll along the trails, listening for birds and watching for native plants.
The property is cool and shady, so hikers can escape the heat of summer in this important restoration area.
Sunday August 28, 5pm-7pm Conservation Management Area, Tiger Lily Lane, Harding Township.
Members $8 each, non-members $10 each. Register online at
www.greatswamp.org.
Birding Basics for Dummies Beginners – Sept 24th
Many birding hikes already assume a fair amount of knowledge on the part of the participant…. Not so this program!
Tour guides will cover the birding basics, with a focus on using field guides, learning what to watch for to identify
birds, where and when to bird for success. Visitors will leave knowing at least 10 birds by sight and sound, and a
new love for figuring out bird identification. This program is especially suitable for adults of all ages.
Participant should bring binoculars and field guides if they have them
September 24 10am-12noon, Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Long Hill Road Boardwalk.
Members $8 each, non-members $10 each. Register online at
www.greatswamp.org.
Moonlight Nature Hike – September 17th
Although GSWA doesn’t guarantee the moonlight, there will be plenty of nature to learn about on these night
hikes around the watershed. Participants may hear owls, frogs, night insects or other night noises, perhaps
even coyotes calling! They will play games to learn more about night senses, and revel in being out after
dark without a flashlight!
Saturday September 17, Loantaka Brook Reservation, Morristown. Exact location will be sent upon registration.
Members $8 each, non-members $10 each. Register online at
www.greatswamp.org.
