Great Swamp Watershed Association Announces Thomas Glasser Foundation Grant

The Great Swamp Watershed Association has received a generous grant from the Thomas Glasser Foundation of Westfield, NJ. “The grant will be used to fund environmental education programs in and around the watershed,” said Ruth Kerkeslager, Development Director of the Association.

“GSWA fosters environmental awareness and promotes environmental education for all ages,” said Hazel England, Director of Education and Outreach. “We leverage our educational reach by teaching the teachers, helping to bring environmental learning to life in and out of the classroom.”

“Our education and outreach programs have reached hundreds of teachers and thousands of students to foster environmental awareness and educate the next generation,” said England. “The generosity of the Thomas Glasser Foundation will allow us to continue this critical work.”

The Thomas Glasser Foundation was established in memory of Thomas I. Glasser, of Summit, New Jersey, who lost his life in the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Mr. Glasser and his father, Gerald, had for years planned to start a charitable foundation. After September 11, Mr. Glasser’s father continued with their plan. “I can't think of a better memorial to him,” Gerald Glasser said.

Margie Ticknor, Tom’s sister, said that Tom, who was smart, athletic and passionate about helping others, would have loved to know that his Foundation was helping to educate children about the environment. “The Thomas Glasser Foundation is pleased to support the Great Swamp Watershed Association in its work to enhance the quality of life of the people in our communities by fostering environmental awareness and promoting environmental education for all ages,” said Mrs. Ticknor.
