Birds in the Great Swamp Watershed




Sightings

Throughout the year Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is teeming with birds. The Great Blue Herons are in the Rookery, and can be seen from the overlook observation area on Pleasant Plains Road. Be sure to look for Eastern Bluebirds along the road too, as there are many to be seen, especially in the early morning and evening.

There are also many Wild Turkeys in the fields along Pleasant Plains Rd. Best time to see them (or hear them!) is early morning.

Downy Woodpeckers
Hairy Woodpeckers
Wood Ducks
Mallard Ducks

There have also been reports of a Red Headed Woodpecker
