Volunteer Appreciation 2010

More than 70 people attended GSWA’s 2010 Volunteer Appreciation Event on June 8 to celebrate the dedication and generosity of the many people who give their time and energy to our water monitoring, educational, advocacy and land management efforts. We have more than 300 active volunteers who help out at the office and at community outreach events, monitor our streams, deliver in-school presentations and provide manual labor to Conservation Management Area restoration projects.

Kelley Curran and Joe Balwierczak

Kelley Curran, GSWA’s Director of Water Quality Programs, recognized Stream Team partners Joe Balwierczak and Barbara Wefing (not pictured) who participated in GSWA’s Visual Stream Assessment Training in 2008 and have since been active in monitoring their assigned stream reaches, helping out at our annual stream cleanups and working with Kelley on implementing GSWA’s Silver Brook Restoration Project.

Hazel England and Chuck Gullage

Chuck Gullage (pictured with Hazel England, GSWA’s Director of Education and Outreach) just can’t seem to do enough for GSWA! Chuck was honored at this year’s event for helping to educate our children with demonstrations of the watershed model, leading some of this year’s new adult education events, and participating as a member of the Stream Team by keeping tabs on storm water runoff and stream bank conditions.

GSWA is delighted with the time and energy all of our volunteers give to protecting water and land in the Great Swamp watershed. Many people have worked long and hard over the years to help GSWA achieve its goals...and this year some two dozen new volunteers have signed up! Of course, we can’t forget our businesses partners whose employees provide thousands of volunteer hours each year to our land stewardship work.

Special thanks to Green Path Organic Landcare for maintaining the grounds around GSWA’s offices. Great job!
