Volunteer Opportunities at Great Swamp Watershed Association
Volunteers are at the heart of many of the programs at Great Swamp Watershed Association. From stream
sampling to attending municipal meetings to helping with hands on land management at our Conservation
Management Area, volunteers are at the heart of our programs.
If you are interested in getting actively involved in efforts to protect and preserve the watershed, GSWA
has a number of volunteer opportunities. Please fill out our Volunteer Profile Form
to help us find an opportunity you will thoroughly enjoy!
Education and Outreach
- Volunteers are needed to assist staff with in-classroom presentations using our
hands-on watershed model. Simple, thorough training allows volunteers to make confident in-school presentation
to local area schools to help educate about non-point source pollution in and around the watershed. Volunteers
are needed to help us reach more schools next year.
- Volunteers can be a great asset at outreach events when the public has an
opportunity to learn more about the important work we are doing in and around the watershed. We paint faces and
conduct simple activities to attract kids to our table to lean more about our organization. Outreach events take
place at town fairs, charter days and company picnics throughout the year. We offer simple training in face
painting and activities and you don’t need to be a great artist to help and have fun!
- Volunteers are the heart of the Education and Outreach Committee, helping to guide
educational programs, get the word out about upcoming events and assist with making our educational programs a
success. Our E and O Committee meets once a month except during summer.
- If you are tech savvy we could use your help to update the educational
content of our website, making it the source for up-to-date content on environmental and water quality
issues that impact our watershed. This is a good task for someone who works well independently, and likes
research and detail.
Land Stewardship and Advocacy
- If you are handy with a hammer, and can make a mower move, we could use volunteer help with ongoing
property maintenance projects around our headquarters office. From putting up
shelves, to repairing leaky faucets we could use your fix-it skills. Just a few hours a month would help us out
tremendously to mow, maintain and beautify our office.
- 90% of our land management is conducted with Land Stewardship Volunteers.
From planting native species to removing invasives, maintaining our 1.5 miles of trail and creating new
trails at our 53-acre Conservation Management Area in Harding Township we rely on land management
volunteers throughout the year to conduct the restoration of our property. For more information, see
the Conservation Management Area page.
- If you live in one of the ten watershed towns and keep your ear to the ground about local
issues, our Land Advocacy Committee could always use more eyes and ears.
Anyone who would be willing to either follow development issues in their local newspaper or attend their
local planning board or board of adjustment meetings and report back on pertinent issues is welcome.
We especially need help from Morristown, Mendham Borough, and Mendham Township.
Watershed Management
- For those who like to get their feet wet, GSWA has an ongoing stream monitoring
program. We are measuring water volume, collecting and identifying macro invertebrate
samples, and collecting water quality samples following storm events. Stream Team members meet monthly
and new members are always welcome. We pair new volunteers with veterans so you can benefit from their
training and experience. Stream Team members must be 15 or older — training required.
