Mission
The Great Swamp
Watershed Association was formed in 1981 to encourage good management
policies and practices on behalf of the 12,000 acres of exceptional
protected land within the Great Swamp watershed. This protected
acreage continues to grow, and includes:
-
the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge;
-
the Morristown National Historical Park;
-
over 2,000 acres of public parks managed by Morris and Somerset
counties; and
-
several hundred additional acres of conserved lands
From its inception, the Watershed Association has encouraged
well-coordinated, watershed-wide approaches to water-quality
enhancement and open-space preservation. To that end, we share
resources and undertake programs with a wide variety of groups,
including:
-
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection;
-
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service;
-
National Park Service;
-
U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service;
-
Morris County Natural Resources Conservation Service;
-
Somerset-Union Soil Natural Resources Conservation Service;
-
Somerset and Morris County Park Commissions;
-
the ten municipalities spanned by the watershed; and
-
various civic and educational organizations.
