SUMMARY:Passaic River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Team-up with Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) and Roots & Shoots for our first-ever full Passaic River cleanup in honor of world-renowned environmentalist and conservationist\, Jane Goodall! \nWe’ve identified multiple local parks and dry land sites along the Passaic River that could use some attention and now we need your help to pick up the trash. When trash collects in these areas along the stream banks\, it will eventually make its way into the water\, polluting the river and impacting local wildlife. These types of cleanups make a big impact on the health of the river as a whole. \nSaturday\, May 9\, 2026 \nCleanup 10am-12pm: Select a location that’s convenient for you when you register \nPicnic 1-3pm at Riverside County Park Joseph Carucci Area\, Lyndhurst\, NJ \nClick HERE to register and select your cleanup location (this will take you to a Google form)\nCleanup hub towns (click HERE to view the the map): \n\nNewark Riverfront Park – Raymond Blvd\, Newark\nKearny Riverbank Park – Passaic Ave\, Kearny\nRiverside County Park: South – Riverside Ave\, Lyndhurst\nPulaski Park – 4th St.\, Passaic\nWest Side Park – Totowa Ave\, Paterson (pending checking with parks about current construction)\nKayak Launch for Great Piece Meadows – Camp Ln\, Fairfield\nCanoe Launch – South Orange Ave/ Columbia Tpke\, Livingston\nShepard Kollock Park – Parrott Mill Rd\, Chatham\nUnion County Passaic River Picnic Area – Stanley Ave\, Summit\n\n  \n \nClick HERE to show your support and your spirit – browse and purchase limited event swag to use at the cleanup (this will take you to “Bonfire” a third party website) \n  \nJane Goodall was an inspiration to countless people. She led by example\, helping people around the world to engage in their environment in meaningful ways. We hope you will join us in honoring Jane’s legacy at the cleanup and join us after for a free community picnic (location of picnic to be announced) and be sure to spread the word! \n  \nThis event is hosted by GSWA – a Passaic River Waterkeeper Alliance Affiliate and Roots & Shoots New Jersey\, a chapter of Jane Goodall’s community-based youth organization\, with help from our AmeriCorps New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors.

SUMMARY:Blue Moon Hike at the Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Great Swamp like never before under the rare glow of a Blue Moon. While the moon won’t actually change color\, this celestial event occurs when a single calendar month—in this case\, May 2026—features two full moons instead of one. Because the lunar cycle is approximately 29.5 days\, the timing occasionally “laps” our 31-day months\, giving us a “bonus” full moon that only appears once every two to three years. \nWe’ll explore the vibrant nocturnal world of the swamp—listening for the chorus of cicadas and spring peepers\, watching for the silhouettes of owls\, and soaking in the serene atmosphere of the marsh after dark. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with the watershed during a truly “once in a blue moon” moment. \nBe sure to wear appropriate footwear\, dress for the weather\, and bring a reusable water bottle and snacks if you so choose. Registration is required. \nIMPORTANT — WAIVER: Per our special use permit\, the refuge is asking for the hike participants to fill out a liability form before attending. Please complete and email this form to ifilippini@greatswamp.org when you register for this hike.  \n\nPlease email Izzy (ifilippini@greatswamp.org) with questions or cancellations. Ticket sales end on 3/2/2026 at 3:00 PM. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) makes every effort to assure all programs and events go off as planned. Should an event be cancelled due to severe weather or other unexpected reasons\, GSWA will promptly notify all registrants via email and the event page will reflect the status. To accommodate people on the waitlist\, participants needing to cancel should do so ASAP. Cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance will not be refunded unless it is due to a health emergency.
