SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - 8/10: Drew Forest Hike
DESCRIPTION:THIS HIKE IS SOLD OUT.\nPlease email NRago@GreatSwamp.org to be added to the waitlist. \n  \nFriends of the Drew Forest invite GSWA supporters on a special\, guided tour. It’s an easy\, mostly flat walk and takes just over an hour to complete. You’ll visit ponds and view wildlife. You will also learn how protecting this area from deer and invasive plant removal have brought back lost or diminished plant species\, pollinators\, food webs\, and forest structure. We’ll be walking on unpaved paths that may be damp in spots\, so wear appropriate shoes\, long pants with socks and long sleeves or carry bug spray. There are no rest room facilities. If you have binoculars bring them along! It takes 10 minutes to walk from Drew’s visitor parking lot\, so please arrive early. \nThe Drew University Forest Preserve\, in Madison\, is 53 acres of unusually contiguous natural forest\, a biodiversity hotspot because of its diversity and extent\, and because of 12 years of successful forest restoration\, on much of the Preserve’s acreage. The Preserve is one of the only forests in the county with a native understory\, where beech and sassafras seedlings thrive\, where pollinators and other insects survive along with the birds that depend upon them. With its biodiversity and natural complexity\, this intact woodland also serves as a major educational and research resource with great value to the entire community. \nThe mature\, intact forests of the Preserve provides important benefits including: \n– Protection and recharge zones for the Buried Valley Aquifer\, Madison’s drinking water source;\n– Carbon sequestration\, heat modulation\, and ecological climate resilience;\n– Publicly accessible open space with forest\, meadow\, and pond ecosystems\, trails\, a self-guiding nature tour\, benches\, and environmental art displays. \nNow at risk of being sold and developed\, the Drew Forest should be protected. \nDirections to the Drew University Forest Preserve’s Zuck Arboretum and Hepburn Woods (from Drew’s Website)\nEnter Drew University from Main Street/Madison Ave. at the traffic light entrance\, called Lancaster Road\, and park in the first lot\, the visitor lot\, to the right of the guardhouse. From the visitor lot\, just walk south away from Main Street along that entrance road (it curves slightly left and then right into the next parking lot). Continue through (or alongside) this long main parking lot (still going south)\, with ball fields on your right and campus buildings on your left. Where the lot ends at the large Forum/Athletic complex\, turn right (west) to cross a road and a bit of lawn to reach a short sidewalk that curves around the baseball outfield. Go left on this sidewalk (south) to its end\, to where there are woods and deer protection fences on both sides. Both trails begin here. Click here to see an area map of the location on Google Maps. \n\nIf the hike is sold out and you wish to be added to the waitlist\, or if you are unable to attend\, please email nrago@GreatSwamp.org. \nIf you are sick\, have a fever\, or have been exposed to someone who may have COVID-19\, for the safety of everyone\, please do NOT attend the hike and cancel by emailing nrago@GreatSwamp.org so we can invite the next person on the waitlist as space is very limited \nWhat to Bring: A tight fitting\, double layer face mask (preferably non-disposable)\, appropriate hiking clothing (jeans\, long t-shirt\, waterproof boots)\, water and snacks\, personal-sized hand sanitizer\, if you have it. \nArrival Details: Please arrive by 5:20 pm to allow for 10 minute walk to the Forest Preserve. When gathering\, please maintain 6-foot distance from other hike participants not in your family or household group. Hike leader will check in with you/your group and then provide further direction on when to follow them into the trail system once all participants have arrived and checked in.

We will show you how to prepare a delicious garlic mustard pesto made from foraged wild garlic mustard. Register on our website under “events.”

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Vernal Pool Exploration
DESCRIPTION:SORRY\, THIS HIKE IS SOLD OUT. \nWith temperatures rising\, the forest floor will be hopping with new life as frogs and other amphibians crowd into shallow puddles of water to breed and lay their eggs. These puddles\, called vernal pools\, provide a perfect opportunity to learn more about Mother Nature here in New Jersey. But we have to hurry as they disappear quickly! This annual nighttime Vernal Pool Exploration provides a fun\, outdoor learning experience for kids and adults alike. Discover the differences between a spring peeper\, a chorus frog\, and a wood frog. Find out how far an endangered spotted salamander will walk to find a mating pool. And\, learn how much everything we have come to appreciate about springtime depends on  some unassuming puddles of water on the forest floor. Warm clothing and waterproof footwear\, especially hiking boots\, are strongly recommended. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Evening Hike at Primrose Farm
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR NEW DATE.\n  \nOctober is a beautiful time to hike! GSWA‘s hiking series continues in October. The colors of fall are on full display – between changing leaves and the late blooming wildflowers there just so much to take in. What can you see on our hikes? New England aster shines an intense lavender color that will brighten any cool cloudy day. Be sure to look out for the panicled aster too\, these look like an apartment complex of daisies\, with small flowerheads that can be anywhere from white to baby pink or very pale purple. These flowers will be magnets for the year’s remaining pollinators. Poison ivy will be changing colors and bearing white berries which will help birds fatten up for the Winter. On the forest floor\, chipmunks and squirrels will be busy collecting acorns for their winter storage. Where there are rodents like chipmunks\, voles\, and white-footed mice there will be slithering snakes and hungry foxes keeping their numbers in check. By late October and early November\, birds from the far north will be making their way back to New Jersey like the cheerful white-throated sparrow. \n  \n\nLocation: Primrose Farm (see below for google map) \nNote: Advance registration is required\, space is limited to 8 people. No walk-ins. Also\, please “go before you go” as there are no available restrooms at the site. \nCOVID-19 safety protocols: Programs are offered subject to current advisory status from the Governor’s office. Masks must remain ON\, covering your nose and mouth entirely\, for the duration of the hike\, no exceptions. If you need to remove or adjust your mask\, please make sure you have moved away to a safe distance from other participants before doing so\, and have put your mask back on when you return to the group. Please maintain a distance of 6-feet from other hike participants not in your immediate group (If hiking as a family or couple\, please try to stay close together to make sure there is enough room on the trails). We have created special areas along the trails with widened/expanded capacity to gather and talk about things we might see. When gathering in these areas please spread out as best as you can and ensure everyone has enough room to safely listen to the hike leader. We ask that if you have any questions that you utilize these times to ask them\, and try not to move past other participants or crowd the hike leader while moving along the trails. \nBathroom Protocol: Please “Go before you Go” as we have limited facilities on-site that will only be open for absolute emergencies.

SUMMARY:Guided Morning Hike - Aug 1 at 10 am
DESCRIPTION:C’mon out for an exclusive\, members-only\, semi-private hike with GSWA’s own Adam Palmer to explore our Conservation Management Area (CMA). Many people have hiked our trails during the lockdown which have remained open for passive recreation. Perhaps you’re one of them. But there’s so much more to see\, like all our recent restorations\, as you tour the site with an insider. \nAs we hike the trails of our 73-acre property\, we’ll share what is happening with wildlife during the summer months and talk about of the area’s ecology. We’ll also check out the marsh\, upland beech forest and vernal wetlands. And let’s face it\, being outside is so important for our minds\, bodies\, and souls. \nFor everyone’s safety\,we can only accommodate a max of 6 people comprised of unrelated individuals\, or 8 people consisting of family members or couples (because they can group close together). We created special physical distancing areas around the trails through our stewardship days\, and we will enforce physical distancing and wearing masks throughout the hike. Detailed instructions of our COVID-19 protocol will be shared with you upon registration. \nRestricted group sizes allow for the best safety practices\, and these hikes will fill up extremely fast. ABSOLUTELY NO WALK-INs – ALL MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE. Programs are offered subject to current advisory status from the Governor’s office. Also\, please “go before you go” as there are limited facilities at the site. \nIf this hike is sold out OR you must cancel\, please email knecovska@GreatSwamp.org to be added to a wait list. Space is extremely limited. \n  \nCOVID-19 RELEASE – Read and Agree to complete registration. \nGreat Swamp Watershed Association Guided Hike Protocol \nExpectations: For the safety of our staff and our other volunteers\, individuals wishing to participate in our guided hikes MUST follow all protocols as outlined and agreed upon below. Failure to meet any of these guidelines will result in the individual being asked immediately to return home\, and to no longer participate in our program. No exceptions. \nIf you are sick\, have a fever\, or have been exposed to someone who may have COVID-19\, for the safety of everyone\, please do NOT attend the hike and cancel by emailing knecovska@GreatSwamp.org so we can invite the next person on the waitlist as space is very limited \nWhat to Bring: A tight fitting\, double layer face mask (preferably non-disposable)\, appropriate hiking clothing (jeans\, long t-shirt\, waterproof boots)\, water and snacks. Personal size purell if you have it. \nArrival Details: Please park on the outskirts of the cul-de-sac at the end of Tiger Lily Lane. Before exiting your vehicle please make sure you are wearing your mask and wait by your vehicle for the hike leader to give further instructions. SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Spring has Sprung Hike at the CMA
DESCRIPTION:Nature is blooming all around and the critters of our Conservation Management Area are fully awake after a long winter’s nap. So\, gather up your family and hop on over to check out all the activity at this pre-Easter hike. While the birds are busy making their nests\, wood frog tadpoles can be seen swimming about\, spring peepers and forest frogs will be calling from the cattail marsh pond\, and the woodpeckers will resume drumming at the trees that are starting to bloom. Come reconnect with nature and our woodland friends at this relaxing morning hike.
