SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Nature Detectives Hike
DESCRIPTION:The warm weather combined with the snowmelt has made our trails messy\, therefore\, we’ve made the decision to cancel this hike. \n  \nWhat’s hiding on the forest floor? What’s going on in the trees? Let’s do some detective work and make some discoveries together! \nThe Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is the perfect place to learn how to identify animals from their tracks\, scats (yes\, poop) and other clues. Spy on secret hideouts used by birds\, insects\, and other woodland creatures. Discover the dining preferences of deer\, raccoons\, and even coyotes by putting a magnifying glass to some scat. All this detective work is easier than you think. And let’s face it\, it’s fun being outdoors in the summer! \nRecommended for all\, but especially children 5 to 12 years old accompanied by an adult. We will meet at the head of the Orange Trail at the end of Meyersville Rd.\, Green Village. The lot is small\, so please consider carpooling and be mindful when parking. \nThis event is free for our GSWA members. For non-members\, a suggested $10 donation for adults and $5 for children 6-17 is appreciated.

SUMMARY:Plant for Pollinators Webinar #1: Soft Landings Add Life Under Trees
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the first of three “Plant for Pollinators 2026” webinars! In preparation of our April online plant sale\, Shannon Currey\, horticultural expert with Izel Native Plants\, will share the benefits of native plants and offer suggestions for which “soft landings” to use under our backyard trees.  \nNative trees provide a host of benefits in cultivated spaces from reducing backyard temperatures to creating critical habitat for native wildlife. However\, sun exposure and soil moisture vary greatly under tree canopies\, so figuring out exactly what to plant underneath trees can be challenging! Sadly\, the default is often lawn or mulch. When we leave these areas as lawn\, we miss a valuable opportunity to realize the full potential of these underplanting areas and enhance our native landscapes. \nThe concept of creating soft landings under trees uses diverse native plantings which support wildlife and add ecological function. Many insect pollinators begin their lives up in our native trees. Soft landings provide critical shelter and habitat underneath those trees which many species need to complete their life cycle. This planting approach also helps support the trees\, improve soil health\, and manage stormwater… and it’s much more appealing than mulch or turfgrass! \nJoin Shannon to learn how to move beyond the default using herbaceous\, native plants to add life\, function\, and beauty under your trees. \nBe on the lookout for info about our February and March webinars coming soon. Our Plant for Pollinators webinars are free to attend\, but please consider a donation to offset the cost of bringing these great\, nationally recognized speakers to share their insight. \nMark your calendar: GSWA’s online native plant sale kick-off webinar takes place  March 31 at 7pm\, where you will learn about the 43 native species available at our sale! The sale runs online April 1-21 with pickup at a wide variety of regional locations May 2-3. \nRegistration closes at 5 PM the day of each webinar. \nA Zoom link will be emailed to early registrants 24 hours prior to the start of the webinar and again by 5:30 PM day-of. If you don’t see it\, check your spam folder. Please add ifilippini@greatswamp.org to your email contacts to avoid sending the link to your spam folder. The webinar is recorded and all registrants will receive the replay link within 2 business days of the end of the webinar. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Light Pollution: An Overview
DESCRIPTION:Light pollution is practically ubiquitous\, yet for most it goes unnoticed each night. Artificial light has creeped into our yards and forest\, disrupting circadian rhythms of wildlife\, plants\, and us humans. Nocturnal animals\, who have evolved to thrive in dark conditions\, no longer have the upper hand against their prey. Trees and other plants growing under the glow of streetlights are shown to be less resilient than those given a nights rest. Even people need natural darkness to reset\, and with studies finding those who live in excess of light pollution can higher rates of depression\, diabetes\, and more. At times the solution can be as easy as switching off the lights\, but in our fast-paced society that is not always an option. \nJoin Great Swamp Watershed Association’s Ginger Van Ryzin to learn what exactly is light pollution\, its effects on the flora and fauna\, and what we can do to protect our ecosystems against it. Sponsored by the Environmental Commission of Chatham Borough\, Chatham Township and Madison. \nLocation: Lundt Room at Library of the Chathams \nRegistration required! Note: Registration ends February 5 at 3:00pm.

SUMMARY:Stream Assessment Training - FREE
DESCRIPTION:Unless there’s obvious pollution in the river or stream\, to the untrained eye\, the water may look healthy. But is it? This free training session\, led by Sandra LaVigne\, GSWA Director of Water Quality Programs\, will provide you with all the necessary skills to make your own determinations. An indoor classroom session teaches you how to conduct visual and biological stream assessments\, identify macroinvertebrates\, and recognize environmental factors that could impact stream health. An outdoor session lets you practice your new-found skills at a local stream site. By afternoon\, you will be fully trained in visual and biological stream assessment. And if you are ready to take that next step\, consider becoming a stream monitoring volunteer! \nTools and supplies will be provided. It gets a little messy so wear your boots and bring clean shoes to change into afterward. Preferred volunteers are 15 or older. \nThis free training session is held in conjunction with the AmeriCorps New Jersey Watershed Ambassador Program.

SUMMARY:Passaic River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Team-up with Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) and Roots & Shoots for our first-ever full Passaic River cleanup in honor of world-renowned environmentalist and conservationist\, Jane Goodall! \nWe’ve identified multiple local parks and dry land sites along the Passaic River that could use some attention and now we need your help to pick up the trash. These types of cleanups make a big impact on the health of the river as a whole. \nSaturday\, May 9\, 2026 \nCleanup 10am-12pm: Select a location that’s convenient for you when you register \nPicnic 1-3pm at Riverside County Park Joseph Carucci Area\, Lyndhurst\, NJ \nClick HERE to register and select your cleanup location (this will take you to a Google form)\nCleanup hub towns (click HERE to view the the map): \n\nNewark Riverfront Park – Raymond Blvd\, Newark\nKearny Riverbank Park – Passaic Ave\, Kearny\nRiverside County Park: South – Riverside Ave\, Lyndhurst\nPulaski Park – 4th St.\, Passaic\nWest Side Park – Totowa Ave\, Paterson (pending checking with parks about current construction)\nKayak Launch for Great Piece Meadows – Camp Ln\, Fairfield\nCanoe Launch – South Orange Ave/ Columbia Tpke\, Livingston\nShepard Kollock Park – Parrott Mill Rd\, Chatham\nUnion County Passaic River Picnic Area – Stanley Ave\, Summit\n\n  \n \nClick HERE to show your support and your spirit – browse and purchase limited event swag to use at the cleanup (this will take you to “Bonfire” a third party website) \n  \nJane Goodall was an inspiration to countless people. She led by example\, helping people around the world to engage in their environment in meaningful ways. We hope you will join us in honoring Jane’s legacy at the cleanup and join us after for a free community picnic (location of picnic to be announced) and be sure to spread the word! \n  \nThis event is hosted by GSWA – a Passaic River Waterkeeper Alliance Affiliate and Roots & Shoots New Jersey\, a chapter of Jane Goodall’s community-based youth organization\, with help from our AmeriCorps New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors.

SUMMARY:Blue Moon Hike at the Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Great Swamp like never before under the rare glow of a Blue Moon. While the moon won’t actually change color\, this celestial event occurs when a single calendar month—in this case\, May 2026—features two full moons instead of one. Because the lunar cycle is approximately 29.5 days\, the timing occasionally “laps” our 31-day months\, giving us a “bonus” full moon that only appears once every two to three years. \nWe’ll explore the vibrant nocturnal world of the swamp—listening for the chorus of cicadas and spring peepers\, watching for the silhouettes of owls\, and soaking in the serene atmosphere of the marsh after dark. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with the watershed during a truly “once in a blue moon” moment. \nBe sure to wear appropriate footwear\, dress for the weather\, and bring a reusable water bottle and snacks if you so choose. Registration is required. \nIMPORTANT — WAIVER: Per our special use permit\, the refuge is asking for the hike participants to fill out a liability form before attending. Please complete and email this form to ifilippini@greatswamp.org when you register for this hike.  \n\nPlease email Izzy (ifilippini@greatswamp.org) with questions or cancellations. Ticket sales end on 3/2/2026 at 3:00 PM. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) makes every effort to assure all programs and events go off as planned. Should an event be cancelled due to severe weather or other unexpected reasons\, GSWA will promptly notify all registrants via email and the event page will reflect the status. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Hike
DESCRIPTION:Nature journaling is a centuries-old practice used to record observations\, changes and data about the world around us. It is also a way to build observational and relational thinking and curiosity. We will wander through the CMA\, pausing several times to collect our observations\, questions\, and connections in our notebooks. Through prompts and practices\, we will deepen our awareness of the natural world and let our own curiosity guide our observations. You do not need to be an artist or a naturalist to enjoy nature journaling\, you just have to be willing to slow down and take a look around! \nNo previous artistic experience required. Adults – includes journal notebook\, art supplies provided. \n\nPlease email Izzy ifilippini@greatswamp.org with questions or cancellations. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) makes every effort to assure all programs and events go off as planned. SUMMARY:Breakfast Briefing: Plastic Pellet Pollution Survey
DESCRIPTION:The plastic problem starts long before a bottle hits the recycling bin—it begins with nurdles. These tiny plastic pellets are the building blocks of almost every plastic product\, but they often end up in our waterways instead of a factory. \n\n\nCome out to enjoy a light breakfast and learn how we’re monitoring our rivers to track these microplastics and what we’re doing to keep them out of the watershed. It’s a great chance to see the “behind-the-scenes” science of water protection and how tiny pellets can have a huge impact on our local environment. \n\n\nSpots are limited.
