SUMMARY:Nature Detective Discovery Hike
DESCRIPTION:KIDS…UNLOCK YOUR INNER DETECTIVE\nLOCATION CHANGED TO OUR CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT AREA \nWhat’s hiding under those freshly fallen leaves? What’s going on in the trees? Let’s do some detective work and make some discoveries together! \nTo make the hike as exciting and kid friendly as possible\, we have decided to change the location of our hike to the GSWA Conservation Management Area at 1 Tiger Lily Ln in Morristown. \nIt is also the perfect place to set off in hot pursuit of the region’s most-wanted autumn wildlife. Come learn how to identify animals from their tracks\, scats (yes\, poop) and other clues. Spy on secret hideouts used by birds\, insects\, and other woodland creatures. Discover the dining preferences of deer\, raccoons\, and even coyotes by putting a magnifying glass to some scat. All this detective work is easier than you think. And let’s face it\, it’s fun being outdoors in the fall! \nRecommended for all\, but especially children 5 to 12 years old. We recommend wearing boots or shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. This event is free for our GSWA members. Non-members\, a $10 donation for adults and $5 for children 6-17 is appreciated.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED - Boonton Falls "Little Niagara" Hike
DESCRIPTION:The postponed hike has been rescheduled to 9/10/22. If you signed up previously\, will contact you again about the rescheduled date.  \nHere’s an awesome hiking experience close to home! Come see (and hear) about one of New Jersey’s amazing hidden treasures\, the Boonton Falls. The Boonton area is rich in history so we’ll discuss how the falls and the Rockaway River made Boonton an ideal location for the now abandoned New Jersey Iron Company in the 1830’s. The Morris Canal transport system moved the manufactured nail rods and bar iron through the tri-state area. Come experience all this and more! \nWe will meet at the Upper Plane Street Parking Lot in Boonton. Use the following link coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/5SDud5Dd8qomUdgs7. NOTE: On Saturday there will be the Boonton Farmers Market.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Harvest Moon Night Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike is sold out. If you wish to be added to the waitlist or if you are registered and unable to attend\, please email nrago@GreatSwamp.org.. \nEnjoy maximum beauty\, a full Harvest Moon. \nWith autumn just around the corner\, this is a spectacular time of year to get outside for a night hike. Come enjoy the beauty of the full “Harvest Moon” over the water at the WOC (Wildlife Observation Center). A full moon this time of year is typically called the Harvest Moon because the angle of the moon’s orbit relative to the Earth’s horizon is at its minimum\, causing the full moon to rise above the horizon much faster than usual. This once helped farmers bring in the harvest late into the night. For us\, it means we will have a bright night sky to light the way as we traverse the beautiful trails of the Refuge. This is a free hike for our GSWA Members. Non-members: suggested donation of $10 for adults/$5 for children 6-17.

SUMMARY:Paterson Falls Explorer Hike and Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore Paterson from the other end of the Passaic. Join us for an afternoon of nature and natural history. Staff from the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park will guide us on an informative hike through the area where will check out the new viewing platform to explore the 77-foot high waterfall. From there we’ll hike along the old raceway\, and we’ll even squeeze in a museum visit. It’s a great opportunity to gain insight into the importance of Paterson\, the first planned industrial city that was centered around the Great Falls\, and how it changed the face of our country. We will meet at the Great Falls and go from there. Dress for the weather\, hiking boots recommended for potentially muddy conditions.

We want to connect as many folks as possible with their local water bodies and watersheds. Everyone lives in a watershed. What we do and where we live impacts the water\, even if it is far away! This year’s theme is ‘In Your Neighborhood’. So today\, we challenge you all to head out into your neighborhood\, connect with the environment\, and see how you can make a difference! This FREE challenge runs now through July 23.  \nHow to Play: Download the eco-bingo card and spend some time exploring your local watershed. (Some challenges can be completed on your computer or smartphone.) Have fun carrying out the challenges between July 8\, 2022 – July 23\, 2022 (cross out corresponding squares) until you complete a row horizontally\, vertically\, or diagonally. \nHow to Submit: Snap a photo of your completed card and share it with us by filling out this Google Form -OR- complete your submission and email it to GreatSwampWatershed@gmail.com. IMPORTANT: If you are submitting via email\, please include your first name and last initial\, town\, state\, and whether we can use your photo. \nSubmission Deadline: Midnight\, July 23\, 2022. \nWinner Selection & Prize: We will post pictures of the entries as they come in. Winner can choose from three prizes: 1) Paddle for the winner and three friends; 2) GSWA Reusable Mug and Bag for winner and three friends; 3) GSWA Hike for winner and three friends. \n* A community initiative through the Waterfront Alliance and funded by NY/NJ Harbor Estuary Program and the Hudson River Foundation. \nEco-bingo Challenges Explained: \n\nFind out: Where does your household water come from? Is it taken out of a reservoir\, from a well\, or even the Passaic River?\nTake a selfie of you and your favorite water spot and let us know where you are!\nPick up at least five pieces of litter on a hike or walk. Litter finds its way to the water when carried by rain.\nUse only refillable beverage containers all day (no disposable coffee cups or single use bottles).\nSpend at least 10 mins. watching wildlife in your watershed. There are many apps to help you\, like iNaturalist.\nVisit the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park.\nLike Great Swamp Watershed on Facebook.\nFollow the Waterfront Alliance on Instagram.\nFollow the Twitter profile for the NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP).\nUse the Water Footprint Calculator to find what’s your water footprint. Tell us when you submit your entry.\nJoin the Great Swamp Watershed as a member or Donate to GSWA to help us achieve our mission to protect water and land for a healthier environment now and for the future.\nGo for a hike at the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge. or the Conservation Management Area.\nUse the #Cityofwaterday hashtag and post a picture of one of your challenge squares being completed.\nCollect rainwater to water your plants. Not only does rainwater collection encourage zero-waste but it is a great hydration source for your plants too.\nAdd a vegetarian meal to your day. Legumes like kidney beans require only a tenth of the water that beef does per unit of protein.\nSkip buying new clothes. Shop Second Hand or join a local Buy Nothing community-based group. A new pair of jeans uses 1\,800 gallons of water to produce\, and a cotton t-shirt uses 400 gallons.\nBuy locally grown fruits and vegetables. Eating locally grown food reduces your carbon footprint.\n20. Time your shower. The average shower uses 2.5 gallons of water per minute\, and hot water uses more energy than cold. Pick a favorite song that’s about 3 minutes long and put it on! This helps to track how long you shower\, and conserves water helps the watershed.\nCarpool or bike! On average\, one gallon of gasoline takes three-to-six gallons of water to produce.\nSkip watering your lawn for the weekend (or for the whole summer!) Lawns are considered the number one irrigated ‘crop’ in the US\, using a whopping 9 billion gallons nationwide each day.\nMake an eco-friendly swap in your cleaning products. Many cleaning products contain chemicals that can be harmful to our health and the environment. Visit our website for a great breakdown of what you can use instead: ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND CLEANING PRODUCTS.\nPick up five plastic water bottles during a walk. Tell us how long it took you to collect them.

SUMMARY:Lunch 'n Learn: Water Quality Report Card
DESCRIPTION:Zoom registration closes at 11 AM on Friday\, June 17. This is the rescheduled Report Card from April. \nDID YOU KNOW: Human beings can survive almost three weeks without food\, but only a few days without water! \nTake your lunch break and Zoom In for an in-depth review of the water quality in the Great Swamp watershed and the Passaic River region. GSWA conducts stream monitoring  at 21 locations annually for a suite of chemical parameters. We are the only entity\, non-profit\, corporate\, or government\, monitoring the five main streams of the Great Swamp Watershed and Passaic River on a consistent basis. \nGSWA Water Quality Director\, Sandra LaVigne\, will highlight the results of the sampling and testing we performed on our local streams throughout 2021. Sandra will also provide an update on testing for PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) manmade chemicals also called “forever chemicals.” PFAS is a growing threat to waters. \nJoin us for this informative report on your local water and will include a Q&A session at the end. Registration is required and the Zoom link will be sent via email prior to the program.
