SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - 8/10: Drew Forest Hike
DESCRIPTION:THIS HIKE IS SOLD OUT.\nPlease email NRago@GreatSwamp.org to be added to the waitlist. \n  \nFriends of the Drew Forest invite GSWA supporters on a special\, guided tour. It’s an easy\, mostly flat walk and takes just over an hour to complete. You’ll visit ponds and view wildlife. You will also learn how protecting this area from deer and invasive plant removal have brought back lost or diminished plant species\, pollinators\, food webs\, and forest structure. We’ll be walking on unpaved paths that may be damp in spots\, so wear appropriate shoes\, long pants with socks and long sleeves or carry bug spray. There are no rest room facilities. If you have binoculars bring them along! It takes 10 minutes to walk from Drew’s visitor parking lot\, so please arrive early. \nThe Drew University Forest Preserve\, in Madison\, is 53 acres of unusually contiguous natural forest\, a biodiversity hotspot because of its diversity and extent\, and because of 12 years of successful forest restoration\, on much of the Preserve’s acreage. The Preserve is one of the only forests in the county with a native understory\, where beech and sassafras seedlings thrive\, where pollinators and other insects survive along with the birds that depend upon them. With its biodiversity and natural complexity\, this intact woodland also serves as a major educational and research resource with great value to the entire community. \nThe mature\, intact forests of the Preserve provides important benefits including: \n– Protection and recharge zones for the Buried Valley Aquifer\, Madison’s drinking water source;\n– Carbon sequestration\, heat modulation\, and ecological climate resilience;\n– Publicly accessible open space with forest\, meadow\, and pond ecosystems\, trails\, a self-guiding nature tour\, benches\, and environmental art displays. \nNow at risk of being sold and developed\, the Drew Forest should be protected. \nDirections to the Drew University Forest Preserve’s Zuck Arboretum and Hepburn Woods (from Drew’s Website)\nEnter Drew University from Main Street/Madison Ave. at the traffic light entrance\, called Lancaster Road\, and park in the first lot\, the visitor lot\, to the right of the guardhouse. From the visitor lot\, just walk south away from Main Street along that entrance road (it curves slightly left and then right into the next parking lot). Continue through (or alongside) this long main parking lot (still going south)\, with ball fields on your right and campus buildings on your left. Where the lot ends at the large Forum/Athletic complex\, turn right (west) to cross a road and a bit of lawn to reach a short sidewalk that curves around the baseball outfield. Go left on this sidewalk (south) to its end\, to where there are woods and deer protection fences on both sides. Both trails begin here. Click here to see an area map of the location on Google Maps. \n\nIf the hike is sold out and you wish to be added to the waitlist\, or if you are unable to attend\, please email nrago@GreatSwamp.org. \nIf you are sick\, have a fever\, or have been exposed to someone who may have COVID-19\, for the safety of everyone\, please do NOT attend the hike and cancel by emailing nrago@GreatSwamp.org so we can invite the next person on the waitlist as space is very limited \nWhat to Bring: A tight fitting\, double layer face mask (preferably non-disposable)\, appropriate hiking clothing (jeans\, long t-shirt\, waterproof boots)\, water and snacks\, personal-sized hand sanitizer\, if you have it. \nArrival Details: Please arrive by 5:20 pm to allow for 10 minute walk to the Forest Preserve. When gathering\, please maintain 6-foot distance from other hike participants not in your family or household group. Hike leader will check in with you/your group and then provide further direction on when to follow them into the trail system once all participants have arrived and checked in.

But why should it end there when we can turn that material into something serene and decorative? Because when life gives you bamboo\, we say\, make bamboo chimes! Space is limited so register today! \nPlease email Nancy: nrago@GreatSwamp.org for the following reasons: \n\nTo be added to a waitlist\nIf you are unable to attend (so we may extend the invitation to the next person on the waitlist)\nIf you are sick\, have a fever\, or have been exposed to someone who may have COVID-19\, for the safety of everyone\, please do NOT attend the program and cancel by emailing nrago@GreatSwamp.org

SUMMARY:Evening Briefing: Wow! Major Wetlands Restoration at the CMA!
DESCRIPTION:Our Conservation Management Area (CMA) underwent some major transformations at the end of 2020! After nearly a decade in the works\, Hazel England\, GSWA Director of Land Stewardship\, and Mike Devos of Indigenous Ingenuities led this wetland project. Come hear about the important restoration efforts that took place to help restore our CMA closer to its natural state. Hazel and Mike will walk us through the restoration of the Silver Brook\, the creation of 360\,000 square feet of vernal habitat\, the plugging a 350-foot drainage ditch and so much more that occurred over the course of five frantic weeks. Additionally\, you will learn of the changes brought about by this project\, like the increased water being held on the property (that’s a good thing!) and the ongoing stewardship that will now be require need to manage these changes. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: 9/20 - Harvest Moon Night Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike is sold out. If you wish to be added to the waitlist or if you are registered and unable to attend\, please email nrago@GreatSwamp.org. \n  \nThis event is a spectacular time of year to get outside for a hike at night. The full Harvest Moon appears on this very night\, two days before the arrival of autumn. A full moon this time of year is typically called the “Harvest Moon” because the angle of the moon’s orbit relative to the Earth’s horizon is at its minimum\, causing the full moon to rise above the horizon much faster than usual. This once helped farmers bring in the harvest late into the night. For us\, it means we will have a bright night sky to light the way as we traverse the beautiful trails of the Refuge. \n  \nIf you are sick\, have a fever\, or have been exposed to someone who may have COVID-19\, for the safety of everyone\, please do NOT attend the hike and cancel by emailing nrago@GreatSwamp.org so we can invite the next person on the waitlist as space is very limited \nThis can be a tricky spot to find – below is some additional info to help get you there: \nThe Bluebird Parking Lot is on Pleasant Plains Road\, approx. 0.5 miles north of the refuge’s south gate\, and 1.6 miles south of the Helen C. Fenske Visitor Center – New Vernon\, NJ 07976 \nGoogle map:  https://goo.gl/9vUyCy \nCoordinates:  40.709360\, -74.502889

SUMMARY:Registration is full: GSWA Members Only Hike @ Drew Forest
DESCRIPTION:Registration is full for this hike. To be added to the waitlist\, please email NRago@GreatSwamp.org or call 973-538-3500. \nVisit Drew Forest for a special guided tour for GSWA members only. The tour is an easy\, mostly flat walk where we will check out some pretty ponds and the local wildlife. Our guide will explain how the protection from deer and removal of invasive plants have brought back lost or diminished plant species\, pollinators\, food webs\, and forest structure. \nThe Drew University Forest Preserve is 53 acres of unusually contiguous natural forest\, a biodiversity hotspot thanks in part to 12 years of successful forest restoration. The Preserve is one of the only forests in the county with a native understory where beech and sassafras seedlings thrive and pollinators and other insects survive along with the birds that depend upon them. This intact woodland also serves as a major educational and research resource to the entire community. \nWe’ll be walking on unpaved paths that may be damp in spots\, so wear appropriate shoes\, long pants with socks and long sleeves or carry bug spray. There are no rest room facilities. If you have binoculars bring them along! It takes 10 minutes to walk from Drew’s visitor parking lot so please arrive earlier. \nScroll down to register… \nDirections to the Drew University Forest Preserve’s Zuck Arboretum and Hepburn Woods\nEnter Drew University from Main Street/Madison Ave. at the traffic light entrance\, called Lancaster Road\, and park in the first lot\, the visitor lot\, to the right of the guardhouse. \nDue to the limited number of people who may participate in this hike\, please notify us if you are unable to attend this hike so we may call the next person on the wait list. If you are not feeling well on the day of the hike\, we request that you stay home and join us on another day. Email NRago@GreatSwamp.org or call 973-538-3500.

You will receive Zoom login details prior to the event. \nSUMMIT RESIDENTS ONLY: Due to a generous grant* Summit residents will have an opportunity to set up a FREE at-home consultation with design professionals to plan and layout a garden specific to your yard. SUMMARY:Fairfield Fall Cleanup Day - Nov 19 (11/12 POSTPONED)
DESCRIPTION:Because of Rain Forecast\, Cleanup Rescheduled to Friday\, Nov 19th\nThe flooding caused by Hurricane Ida affected many natural areas adjacent to our local rivers. They were inundated with the trash carried downstream. While GSWA staff were sampling the water quality along the Passaic River in Fairfield\, we observed a large quantity of trash that had been caught up in the trees in the flood plain in this area. \nGSWA\, working together our local NJ AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador\, is organizing a cleanup day to ensure that this area gets the needed attention.  We need your help!  Come out and join us in cleaning up this beautiful area of the Passaic River. The cleanup location on Nov 19th is the boat launch site at the end of Camp Ln\, in Fairfield.  The cleanup will run from 10 – 12 PM.  We are asking people to wear masks and it will be muddy so you should wear appropriate shoes that can get muddy and maybe even wet.

SUMMARY:Post-Thanksgiving Cleanup & Hike @ the CMA
DESCRIPTION:Thanksgiving is a day of giving… giving thanks\, and perhaps giving in to all the delicious temptations we smelled long before they ever found our their way to our plates. And more food-filled holidays are right around the corner. This is the right time to head outside and work it off by helping prepare our Conservation Management Area (CMA) for winter with some important trail maintenance. Then we will put away our tools and will hit the trails again\, this time for some relaxation and sight seeing. If you haven’t already seen all the amazing renovations that took place last November\, now is your chance to see what a healthy swamp is supposed to look like! So\, let’s get together and work and play at the CMA! \nCan’t do the cleanup and the hike? That’s okay. Just let us know which works for you. Either way\, we’re outside and we’re burning calories!

SUMMARY:Geocaching at the CMA
DESCRIPTION:Charge up your phone or GPS device and join us at the CMA for a unique treasure hunt called Geocaching! Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where players use their GPS device to find hidden caches (containers that typically hold a logbook to sign and mark your find). These caches will be hidden throughout the area\, and you will find them based on coordinates (longitude and latitude) as you explore the beautiful trails of GSWA’s Conservation Management Area. This is a Geocaching 101 event where you will learn all there is to know about this growing sport. It’s a fun activity on your own or with the whole family. When you’re done\, we will treat you to hot cider and donuts to celebrate your accomplishments! GSWA members: FREE\, non-member adults: $10\, non-member children: $5. This event is held in partnership with Northern New Jersey Cachers.
