SUMMARY:Movie Night at GSWA - 'Saving the Great Swamp: The Battle to Defeat the Jetport'
DESCRIPTION:Movie & Popcorn at GSWA\nJoin us for an inspiring evening as we screen the movie Saving The Great Swamp: Battle to Defeat the Jetport. This powerful environmental documentary\, narrated by American actress and Tony Award winner Blythe Danner\, recounts the nearly decade-long grassroots fight—beginning in 1959—when local residents stood up against the Port Authority of New York and their plans to build a massive jetport on a little-known natural area in Morris County\, NJ. Thanks to their determination\, that land was preserved and is now the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Imagine what our local towns\, wetlands area and cherished wildlife might look like today if this community initiative had not succeeded. \nWhether it’s your first time watching or a return visit\, this film is sure to inspire. Before the screening\, you’ll even have the chance to meet members of the film’s production team—longtime friends of GSWA. With sunset at 7:00 PM\, we’ll be showing the film outdoors on the driveway\, so bring along camp chairs or blankets for a cozy viewing. Rain or shine\, the event will go on—moving indoors if the weather doesn’t cooperate. \nAdmission is free for GSWA members. Non-member tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Additional donations are welcome and will help cover cost of snacks and refreshments provided during the event. \n\nPlease email Izzy (ifilippini@greatswamp.org) with questions or cancellations. Limited ticket sales end on 09/24/2025 at 5:00 PM. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) makes every effort to assure all programs and events go off as planned. Should an event be cancelled due to severe weather or other unexpected reasons\, GSWA will promptly notify all registrants via email and the event page will reflect the status. SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Nature Detectives Hike
DESCRIPTION:The warm weather combined with the snowmelt has made our trails messy\, therefore\, we’ve made the decision to cancel this hike. \n  \nWhat’s hiding on the forest floor? What’s going on in the trees? Let’s do some detective work and make some discoveries together! \nThe Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is the perfect place to learn how to identify animals from their tracks\, scats (yes\, poop) and other clues. Spy on secret hideouts used by birds\, insects\, and other woodland creatures. Discover the dining preferences of deer\, raccoons\, and even coyotes by putting a magnifying glass to some scat. All this detective work is easier than you think. And let’s face it\, it’s fun being outdoors in the summer! \nRecommended for all\, but especially children 5 to 12 years old accompanied by an adult. We will meet at the head of the Orange Trail at the end of Meyersville Rd.\, Green Village. The lot is small\, so please consider carpooling and be mindful when parking. \nThis event is free for our GSWA members. For non-members\, a suggested $10 donation for adults and $5 for children 6-17 is appreciated.

SUMMARY:Plant for Pollinators Webinar #1: Soft Landings Add Life Under Trees
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the first of three “Plant for Pollinators 2026” webinars! In preparation of our April online plant sale\, Shannon Currey\, horticultural expert with Izel Native Plants\, will share the benefits of native plants and offer suggestions for which “soft landings” to use under our backyard trees.  \nNative trees provide a host of benefits in cultivated spaces from reducing backyard temperatures to creating critical habitat for native wildlife. However\, sun exposure and soil moisture vary greatly under tree canopies\, so figuring out exactly what to plant underneath trees can be challenging! Sadly\, the default is often lawn or mulch. When we leave these areas as lawn\, we miss a valuable opportunity to realize the full potential of these underplanting areas and enhance our native landscapes. \nThe concept of creating soft landings under trees uses diverse native plantings which support wildlife and add ecological function. Many insect pollinators begin their lives up in our native trees. Soft landings provide critical shelter and habitat underneath those trees which many species need to complete their life cycle. This planting approach also helps support the trees\, improve soil health\, and manage stormwater… and it’s much more appealing than mulch or turfgrass! \nJoin Shannon to learn how to move beyond the default using herbaceous\, native plants to add life\, function\, and beauty under your trees. \nBe on the lookout for info about our February and March webinars coming soon. Our Plant for Pollinators webinars are free to attend\, but please consider a donation to offset the cost of bringing these great\, nationally recognized speakers to share their insight. \nMark your calendar: GSWA’s online native plant sale kick-off webinar takes place  March 31 at 7pm\, where you will learn about the 43 native species available at our sale! The sale runs online April 1-21 with pickup at a wide variety of regional locations May 2-3. \nRegistration closes at 5 PM the day of each webinar. \nA Zoom link will be emailed to early registrants 24 hours prior to the start of the webinar and again by 5:30 PM day-of. If you don’t see it\, check your spam folder. Please add ifilippini@greatswamp.org to your email contacts to avoid sending the link to your spam folder. The webinar is recorded and all registrants will receive the replay link within 2 business days of the end of the webinar. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Light Pollution: An Overview
DESCRIPTION:Light pollution is practically ubiquitous\, yet for most it goes unnoticed each night. Artificial light has creeped into our yards and forest\, disrupting circadian rhythms of wildlife\, plants\, and us humans. Nocturnal animals\, who have evolved to thrive in dark conditions\, no longer have the upper hand against their prey. Trees and other plants growing under the glow of streetlights are shown to be less resilient than those given a nights rest. Even people need natural darkness to reset\, and with studies finding those who live in excess of light pollution can higher rates of depression\, diabetes\, and more. At times the solution can be as easy as switching off the lights\, but in our fast-paced society that is not always an option. \nJoin Great Swamp Watershed Association’s Ginger Van Ryzin to learn what exactly is light pollution\, its effects on the flora and fauna\, and what we can do to protect our ecosystems against it. Sponsored by the Environmental Commission of Chatham Borough\, Chatham Township and Madison. \nLocation: Lundt Room at Library of the Chathams \nRegistration required! Note: Registration ends February 5 at 3:00pm.
