Microplastics are an emerging pollutant which are have profound effects on global ecosystems.
Plastic pollution that remains in the environment breaks down into smaller and smaller particles. It causes all kinds of havoc; from wildlife entanglement, to leaching hazardous chemicals into the water. Existing research on the topic has been primarily done on marine ecosystems, yet microplastics occur wherever plastic pollution lands. Streams, rivers, and other bodies of fresh water are vulnerable to this serious issue.
This year, we ask for your help to combat this growing environmental crisis. Through our expanded water quality program, which will include testing for microplastics, your gift will help assure that additional water testing sites are added to the program, and more research and education can be conducted to resolve water quality issues.
