Dark Skies Event – Protect Our Night Sky

Madison Community Arts Center 10 Kings Rd., Madison, NJ, United States

Ever look up at night and wish you could truly see the Milky Way? Light pollution is stealing our stars — disrupting ecosystems and having adverse health effects on both wildlife and humans. Join Morris Township and Madison Borough for a Dark Skies Event to discover how small changes in outdoor lighting can protect our environment, save energy, and restore the beauty of the night sky. The evening will begin with a kickoff from Jeff Grayzel, Deputy Mayor of Morris Township (and GSWA Advisory Council member), and Eric P. Range, Madison Borough Council. They’ll be followed by a presentation from Steve Mariconda, a DarkSky International Delegate, who will share how communities everywhere are reclaiming their view of the stars. This event is open to everyone, but we especially encourage fellow local municipal council, board, and environmental commission members to explore how Dark Sky Ordinances can safeguard our health and bring back our view of the stars for generations to come. Dark Skies Event is on: Monday, Aug. 18 7:00 PM Madison Community Arts Center Let’s work together to keep the stars shining. RSVP here: Dark Skies Event Registration

Movie Night at GSWA – ‘Saving the Great Swamp: The Battle to Defeat the Jetport’

Great Swamp Watershed Association HQ 568 Tempe Wick Rd, Morristown, NJ, United States

Movie & Popcorn at GSWA Join us for an inspiring evening as we screen the movie Saving The Great Swamp: Battle to Defeat the Jetport. This powerful environmental documentary, narrated by American actress and Tony Award winner Blythe Danner, recounts the nearly decade-long grassroots fight—beginning in 1959—when local residents stood up against the Port Authority of New York and their plans to build a massive jetport on a little-known natural area in Morris County, NJ. Thanks to their determination, that land was preserved and is now the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Imagine what our local towns, wetlands area and cherished wildlife might look like today if this community initiative had not succeeded. Before the film begins, you’ll have the chance to meet members of the production team—friends of GSWA—including the Producer/Director/Editor, Co-producer/Co-writer/Historian, and Associate Producer. With sunset at 7:00 PM, we’ll be showing the film outdoors on the driveway, so bring along camp chairs or blankets for a cozy viewing. Rain or shine, the event will go on—moving indoors if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Admission is free for GSWA members. Non-member tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Additional donations are welcome and will help cover cost […]

Evening Hike at the Refuge

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge - Bluebird Parking Lot Bluebird Parking Lot, Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, NJ, United States

October is a special time to hike at the Refuge. It's prime season for fall bird migration and we can observe them settling in as the sun sets. Meanwhile, other critters are just becoming active after dark. We will look and listen for raccoons, foxes, mice, and perhaps even the endangered Indiana bat. While to the frogs and toads serenade us with their calls, with a flashlight, we might spot species like spring peepers, bullfrogs, and various snakes and turtles. A $15 donation per person is appreciated. Registration is required.
