On Saturday, January 30, Join GSWA’s Dan Ross to explore the Conservation Management Area (CMA). He’ll teach you how to spot signs of wildlife during winter months, including tracks and scat. He’ll also guide you in identifying different trees and shrubs without their summer foliage.

Explore New Jersey’s forests at dusk and you just might find yourself in the middle of an interrogation! Who!? Who cooks for you? The barred owl sounds like an awfully inquisitive bird, but, in fact, it’s just trying to protect its turf. Want to learn more about New Jersey’s owls? Then you don’t want to miss this early-evening hike with conservation biologist Dr. Emile DeVito. The Great Swamp Wildlife Observation Center is prime owl-spotting habitat and a perfect spot for Dr. DeVito to demonstrate his owl-calling expertise. With a little luck, you might just hear (or even see!) some of these stealthy night flyers as they move in to investigate the mysterious sounds. Register online.

The duo will guide you through all of the important landscape features that soldiers in George Washington’s Continental Army would have experienced during the brutal winter of 1779-80. Discover a new kind of night life! The forests and wetlands of New Jersey’s Great Swamp are bound to be hopping during this spring hike at the Great Swamp Watershed Association’s Conservation Management Area (CMA).  After all, this is the time of year when spring peepers, wood frogs, chorus frogs, and other chatty amphibians make their way to woodland pools to mate and reproduce.  As twilight explodes into song, learn how critically important these shallow puddles (known as vernal pools) and their adorable denizens are for the health of our water resources and the local environment.

Join GSWA Education Associate Dan Ross as he leads a fun filled hike along the Horizon trail at the CMA and learn about why deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall, why they change colors and other interesting facts along the way! Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for squirrels and chipmunks collecting nuts for the coming months, and observe the forest changing as it prepares for the cooler months to come.        

Winter Nature Detectives Hike

Set off in hot pursuit of the region’s most-wanted wintertime wildlife on this nature detective discovery hike at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.  Learn how to identify animals from their tracks, scats and other leave behind clues. Spy on secret hideouts used by birds, wintering insects, and other woodland creatures. Unmask the dining preferences of deer, raccoons, and even coyotes by putting the magnifying glass to some scat. All this detective work is easier than you think, plus its fun being outdoors in the winter! Recommended for all, but especially children 5 to 12 years old.

Join us for this exciting spin on our always entertaining tasting events, where we will experiment with different food and drink made from New Jersey plants! This event is free to nonmembers and members who bring a nonmember friend as a guest (members coming alone or with other members can join in on the fun too, for a donation of $25). Not only that – but for each nonmember that walks through our door, an anonymous donor has pledged to contribute $25 to GSWA, and to match any gifts made to the organization, dollar-for-dollar.

Vernal Pool Exploration Hike

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT! With temperatures rising, the forest floor will be hopping with new life as frogs and other amphibians crowd into shallow puddles of water to breed and lay their eggs. These puddles, better known as vernal pools, provide a perfect opportunity to learn more about Mother Nature here in New Jersey. But hurry! They disappear quickly. GSWA’s annual Vernal Pool Exploration provides a fun, outdoor learning experience for kids and adults alike. Discover the differences between a spring peeper, a chorus frog, and a wood frog. Find out how far an endangered spotted salamander will walk to find a mating pool. And, learn how much everything we have come to appreciate about the springtime depends on a few unassuming puddles of water on the forest floor. Warm clothing and waterproof footwear — especially hiking boots — are very strongly recommended for this hike. Registration required. Register online or by calling 973-538-3500.
