Stream Assessment Training

Interested in learning how to monitor a stream or gaining a better understanding about stream health? This one-day, two-part training session is for you! An indoor classroom session teaches you how to conduct visual and biological stream assessments and recognize environmental factors that may impact stream health. An outdoor session lets you practice your new-found skills at a local stream site. By the afternoon, you will be a fully trained visual stream assessment volunteer and ready to conduct an assessment. Tools and supplies will be provided. Be sure to wear shoes that are suitable for walking outside and getting dirty. Preferred volunteers are 15 or older. Younger volunteers are welcome with parent participation. This training will be conducted in conjunction with the AmeriCorps New Jersey Watershed Ambassador Program. Registration required.

Even if you just want to learn about stream health, this free, interactive training opportunity may be just the thing for you! An indoor classroom session teaches you how to conduct visual and biological stream assessments, identify macroinvertebrates, and recognize environmental factors that may impact stream health. An outdoor session lets you practice your new-found skills at a local stream site. By afternoon, you will be a fully trained visual-stream assessment volunteer and ready to conduct an assessment! Bring a pair of boots and clean shoes to change into. There will be a short walk to reach the stream. Tools and supplies are provided. Preferred volunteers are 15 or older. Volunteer for Stream Cleanup

City Of Water Day - Help clean our streams COW Day is a celebration of the waters that surround us. Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA)* invites you to observe this important day by helping us clean up the stream. Our theme this year is climate change and the impacts of flooding on water quality. We will highlight this issue by tracking and sharing the single-use plastic collected by our volunteers. VOLUNTEER CLEANUP LOCATIONS: Chatham River Park - Berkley Heights, Spring Garden Brook - Madison Loantaka Headwaters - Morristown, Canoe Launch - Livingston, Passaic River - Long Hill/Millington   Join in the fun and help get our streams healthy! Volunteers to Spruce-up CMA – August 6

Ready to get a little dirty and sweaty in the swamp? Need community service hours. College students - looking for something to add to your resume? Join us on Friday mornings at the GSWA Conservation Management Area (CMA) to help us steward the land on the following days: August 6, 13, 20, 27. We will work from 9 AM to 12:30 PM and enjoy some well-earned snacks provided by GSWA Director of Land Stewardship, Hazel England. We could really use your help getting our CMA tidied up by helping us with the following tasks: Carry in lumber, build and elevate boardwalks which will allow hikers to get through now flooded areas, clear branches and limbs that came down in recent storms, remove invasive plants, and woodchip the trails. Be sure to wear long pants, long sleeves, and hiking boots or old shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a hat and a reusable water bottle. We will provide bug spray, sun block, gloves, and all tools you will need. You’ll work hard, share some laughs, and enjoy some snacks. What better way to spend a Friday morning? See you there!

Volunteer for the CMA Boardwalk Build

Are you in the giving spirit and willing to brave the cold tomorrow morning? We have a lumber delivery and we could use help moving lumber plus maybe make a few boardwalks along the way! We are meeting at 10 a.m. on Friday at the cul-de-sac entrance of the GSWA's CMA on Tiger Lily Lane in Morristown. Dress in layers so you stay comfortable working outdoors. We hope to see you there!
