Stream Assessment Training for Volunteers

Great Swamp Watershed Association HQ 568 Tempe Wick Rd, Morristown, NJ, United States

The Great Swamp Watershed Association needs your help to protect the water resources we all share! If you like spending time outside and wonder what it would be like to be a real citizen scientist—like Benjamin Franklin or Henry David Thoreau—then you should volunteer for GSWA’s Stream Team. Begin your journey by attending our Visual Stream Assessment Training. This workshop will show you how routine visual stream assessment surveys are conducted on our streams and rivers, and how that data can provide critical information about our water resources and the local environment. Then, step by step, you will learn how to conduct an on-the-ground visual stream assessment—one of the most basic water quality assessment tools available to environmental scientists. By the end of the workshop, your first real-world survey of stream health will be complete, and you will be ready to join the rest of GSWA’s Stream Team for future assessments later this spring. A continental breakfast will be served. Ideal volunteers will be 15 years old or older. A portion of this event will be held outdoors and slppery conditions will be present..

Stream Assessment & Macroinvertebrate Training

Long Hill Township Library 917 Valley Rd, Gillette, NJ, United States

If you are interested in becoming a stream monitoring volunteer or just learning more about stream health, this is the training for you! An indoor classroom session helps you learn how to conduct visual and biological stream assessments, and recognize environmental factors that may impact stream health. An outdoor session helps you practice your new-found skills, visually assessing streams and collecting and identifying macroinvertebrates at a local stream site. Afterwards, you will be a fully trained stream assessment volunteer and ready to conduct a new assessment this fall! This training will be conducted in conjunction with the AmeriCorps New Jersey Watershed Ambassador Program.

Water Chestnut Pull & Cleanup at Kitchell Pond

Kitchell Pond 75 Kitchell Road, Morristown, New Jersey

Please help us rescue Kitchell Pond! With the use of canoes we will pull water chestnuts from the pond. Prefer to remain on land? You can help rid the banks of other invasive plants and trash. What is a water chestnut and why are we pulling it? Water chestnuts are invasive aquatic plants that have become a major nuisance in New Jersey’s lakes, ponds, and marshes. The plants form thick, floating mats of vegetation creating a hazard for boaters and other water recreators. These mats also inhibit light penetration into the water which impacts aquatic organisms and can lead to fish kills. Persistent removal of plants via hand-pulling can dramatically reduce a population over time. It takes many hands to make a significant impact, and we hope you’ll pitch in for this important work. This event is cosponsored by Morris County Park Commission. Registration is requested.
