Madison and the Chathams decrease impact on local landfills by going green on May 2
MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY (April 16, 2026) Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) announced today that they have once again been selected by the Environmental Commissions of Chatham Borough, Chatham Township, and Madison Borough to benefit from their bi-annual community yard sale. These individual yard sales will take place on the common date of Saturday, May 2, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM with a rain date of May 3. Registration can be found at GreatSwamp.org.
Participating residents will have their address listed on a digital map for a $10 tax-deductible donation to GSWA. The map offers shoppers sale locations along with the types of merchandise being offered. It will be shared widely with the public via various social media outlets prior to the event. All three towns have waived the usual permit requirements for the event. Those who do not wish to appear on the map may participate at no cost.
“Hosting a yard sale is the perfect way to cap off Earth Month. By embracing the ‘Three Rs,’ these communities are keeping tons of waste out of our landfills and giving perfectly good items a second life,” said Bill Kibler, GSWA Executive Director. “It’s a win-win: neighbors find new treasures, and their registration fee directly supports our mission to protect our local water and land.”
Anyone not hosting their own sale is encouraged to take advantage of this community event. “This isn’t just about the sales, it’s about the community coming together,” said Kibler. “Be sure to save the date for May 2. Whether you’re looking for a great deal or just a walk through the neighborhood, we’d love to see you there.”
The Chathams and Madison yard sales is a bi-annual event, taking place in the spring and in the fall. The fall event is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 with a rain date of October 18.
GSWA hosts over 50 watershed-friendly living programs annually including: the sixth annual Plant for Pollinators Program Online sale (closing April 21 at 5:00 PM), hikes, paddles, speaker programs and more. GSWA members attend most events for free or at a reduced rate. For more information on the yard sale or any GSWA events, visit GreatSwamp.org.
