Join your fellow fungus enthusiast and GSWA Education Coordinator, Adam Palmer, on a foray into the mysterious world of mushrooms, slimes and molds. Enjoy a hike around GSWA’s Conservation Management Area as we look for and talk about the important roles of decomposers, symbiotic relationships, and even parasites in an ecosystem. Volunteer Work Day at the CMA

Come help us maintain and improve our 73-acre Conservation Management Area. Tasks will include trail maintenance, fence repair, and invasive plant removal. Lighter tasks will also be available. Bring your best energy and enthusiasm! Conditions may be wet or muddy. Long pants and sturdy shoes or boots are encouraged. We’ll bring the coffee and donuts to help fuel you along. Participants under 14 must be accompanied by a parent - community service hours can be earned for your school. Registration is required. Can’t make this date? No worries – we will also conduct CMA volunteer work days on October 13, November 10, and December 8, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM. Pick a date that works best for you!

Natural and Cultural History of Jockey Hollow Then and Now

Jockey Hollow Park Ranger and Historian, Eric Olson, and our own Hazel England, Director of Education and Outreach - Land Steward, will co-lead a hike and outdoor talk on the natural history of the night - then and now. Look and listen for owls and other nightlife and hear an 18th century viewpoint on how the early century colonists viewed the darkness. Change of Colors Hike

October is the perfect time to head outdoors and check out all the vibrant colors of autumn, and Garret Mountain Reservation is the place to be. GSWA Education Associate, Adam Palmer, will take you on a journey through the trails of Garret Mountain and help identify the many varieties of trees and plants as they begin to prepare for a long winter’s nap. Situated 500 feet above sea level, Garret Mountain Reservation offers several overlooks with panoramic views of northern New Jersey and New York City that you can't see from anywhere else in Passaic County. Be sure to grab your camera and fill up your reusable water bottle. Wear your hiking boots and dress for the weather. Registration required.

Stream Assessment Training

Interested in learning how to monitor a stream or gaining a better understanding about stream health? This one-day, two-part training session is for you! An indoor classroom session teaches you how to conduct visual and biological stream assessments and recognize environmental factors that may impact stream health. An outdoor session lets you practice your new-found skills at a local stream site. By the afternoon, you will be a fully trained visual stream assessment volunteer and ready to conduct an assessment. Tools and supplies will be provided. Be sure to wear shoes that are suitable for walking outside and getting dirty. Preferred volunteers are 15 or older. Younger volunteers are welcome with parent participation. This training will be conducted in conjunction with the AmeriCorps New Jersey Watershed Ambassador Program. Registration required.

Winter Nature Detectives Discovery Hike

Set off in hot pursuit of the region’s most-wanted wintertime wildlife on this nature detectives discovery hike at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Learn how to identify animals from their tracks, scats, and other clues. Spy on secret hideouts used by birds, wintering insects, and other woodland creatures. Unmask the dining preferences of deer, raccoons, and even coyotes by putting a magnifying glass to some scat. All this detective work is easier than you think. And let’s face it, it’s fun being outdoors in the winter! Recommended for all, but especially children 5 to 12 years old. Registration is required. We will meet at the Bluebird Parking Lot of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which is at the intersection of Pleasant Plains Road Auto Tour Route and Wood Duck Way. It can be tricky to find. Night Hike at Primrose Farm

Kick off the new year with a night hike. C'mon outside and enjoy the sounds and smells of the winter night with GSWA's Education Associate, Adam Palmer. (It's always a fun hike with Adam!) Adjacent to Primrose Brook and the Passaic River, Primrose Farm offers wetlands, fields, streams, and forests. This will be an easy, family-friendly hike. Be sure to dress for the weather, and feel free to bring along some water and snacks. Registration is required.

Due to extreme temperatures and icy trails, this hike is cancelled. To experience similar views and amazing falls, register for our March 31 Paterson Falls Explorer Hike & Tour!   Shadow or no shadow, this Groundhog Day hike is happening! February 2nd is the midpoint of the winter season and a great day to get outside and shake off your winter blues. Rifle Camp Park, located just south of Garret Park in Passaic County, is extensively forested and also the perfect spot to catch stunning views of the Paterson skyline. This is an intermediate hike with some ups and downs, and rocky underfoot. Dress for the weather, hiking shoes strongly recommended. Registration is required.
