NEW LOCATION – Evening Briefing: “Eat the Weeds” Backyard Foraging

PLEASE NOTE THE NEW LOCATION Kemmerer Library, 19 Blue Mill Rd, New Vernon, NJ   Instead of weeding your yard, forage! Come learn about the benefits of foraging for edible invasive (non-native) species like garlic mustard. Garlic mustard is one of the worst invaders of Northeast and Midwest American forests, reducing the diversity of all species. April through end of May is garlic mustard season so you will be able to easily find it to make your own pesto. Come learn about these and other types of plants where we can reduce their presence simply by eating them outright or adding them to a salad! You will receive instruction on how to identify, prepare, and preserve these free greens so you can safely hunt for these delicious invasives while cleaning up your yard! Foraged and homemade treats will be provided. This program is offered in partnership with GSWA and the Kemmerer Library of Harding Twp. We are able to offer this program to the public at no cost thanks to the generous underwriting from Kemmerer Library.

Water Workshop Weekends – Dark Waters Movie Screening

Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) and the Morris Museum are pleased to announce our new partnership; an inaugural set of events beginning with Water Workshop Weekends takes place on July 7, 8, and 15, 2023. Friday, July 7 from 6:30-9:00 PM at the Morris Museum, Morristown, NJ Water Workshop Weekends kick off on Friday, July 7 with the critically acclaimed and star-filled movie, Dark Waters at the Morris Museum’s Bickford Theatre, followed by a panel discussion about PFAS chemicals in our waterways. The film tells the shocking and heroic true story of attorney, Rob Bilott, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, who risks his career and family to uncover a dark secret hidden by one of the world’s largest corporations. He seeks to bring justice to a community that has been dangerously exposed to toxic chemicals for decades. The post film panel will provoke lively discussion on the movie and this timely topic. The panel will include Sandra Lavigne, GSWA Director of Water Quality Monitoring and Laura Norkute, New Jersey American Water Director of Water Quality and Environmental Compliance. Water Workshop Weekends – Family Fun Day at the Morris Museum

The Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) and Morris Museum are pleased to announce our new partnership with an inaugural set of events beginning with Water Workshop Weekends taking place on July 7, 8, and 15, 2023. Saturday, July 8 11:00 AM-2:30 PM - The Morris Museum will host a family fun day with activities from GSWA and the Museum. Attend one of two special screenings of the Smithsonian movie, Age of Humans: Water at 11:30 AM or 1:00 PM. This film reveals how humans have impacted the Earth’s water and details what we can do to change the path of our future. Throughout the event day enjoy a variety of thought-provoking activities from the GSWA and the Morris Museum including Spark!Lab’s “Help Clean Up the Ocean,” the game, “A Day in the Life of a Drop of Water,” the “Water-Match Challenge,” water coloring, and more. You’ll decorate your masterpiece with pinecones, berries, and other items found in nature. While your creativity blossoms, you’ll learn more about the natural items being used in this craft. Hot cider will be served. Price covers everything you need to leave with a finished piece that’s ready to hang on your door or give as a gift. Hot cider and cookies will be served. Come get the scoop about pollinator boxes and how they benefit the environment. This workshop will be “the bee’s knees!” (We apologize for that.) Join us for an evening of building, learning and all-around good fun as we talk about the importance of solitary bees and pollinator habitats to the ecosystem, and build a pollinator box of your own to take home! Climate Proof Your Garden

As extreme weather events and warmer temperatures become even more frequent around New Jersey, it’s time to start thinking about ways to fortify your outdoor spaces. Join Hazel England, Ecologist, Director of Education with the Great Swamp Watershed Association, and weather-weary gardener, to learn about ways to “climate proof” your garden or outdoor space. We'll look at the ways our climate conditions are changing and what to do to help your yard keep up.  We’ll discuss the highs and lows of the seasons and their impacts on your yard, including water conservation strategies such as xeriscaping- the practice of designing landscapes to reduce or eliminate the need for irrigation. Xeriscapes need little or no supplemental water beyond what the natural climate provides. We will also discuss the best plant choices to help your garden weather the storms and droughts. Implementing these strategies can also allow more diversity into your yard where your plants will flourish…as well as improve area biodiversity. Through interactive discussions, we will highlight creative and fun ways to adopt mindful consumption habits and make more eco-friendly choices. To wrap up the session, you will engage in a hands-on craft activity, using saved-from-the-landfill denim to create something useful and beautiful. We will also send you off with a list of resources to keep the sustainable party going!
