CONDO Development Plan – Informational Zoom Webinar

CONDO Development Plan may significantly DEGRADE our GREAT SWAMP WATERSHED Conservation Management Area The proposed S/K Mt. Kemble development plan is for a 96-unit residential, multi-family condominium complex including affordable housing with a community clubhouse, playground, pool, and dog park. This 15.5-acre, triangular shaped, forested parcel flanks Route 287 on one side and the Mt. Kemble office complex on another side. The third side bumps up against wetlands which connect to GSWA's 73-acre Conservation Management Area (CMA) under Route 287. Converting woods to pavement and rooftops significantly increases impervious surface cover. This increases stormwater volume, likely resulting in downstream flooding, added nonpoint pollutant loading, and erosion of both Silver Brook and Great Brook. GSWA strongly opposes this proposed development* and we are deeply concerned about the environmental impact we anticipate on our freshwater wetlands, water quality, recharge, and stormwater. Following are some of our major concerns: Encroachments into freshwater wetlands, encroachments into and alteration of the wetland transition areas (buffers). In some cases, these wetland encroachments would necessitate importing large amounts of fill that would be needed to recontour buffer areas or will be covered by impervious surfaces. Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) and the Morris Museum are pleased to announce our new partnership; an inaugural set of events beginning with Water Workshop Weekends takes place on July 7, 8, and 15, 2023. Friday, July 7 from 6:30-9:00 PM at the Morris Museum, Morristown, NJ Water Workshop Weekends kick off on Friday, July 7 with the critically acclaimed and star-filled movie, Dark Waters at the Morris Museum’s Bickford Theatre, followed by a panel discussion about PFAS chemicals in our waterways. The film tells the shocking and heroic true story of attorney, Rob Bilott, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, who risks his career and family to uncover a dark secret hidden by one of the world’s largest corporations. He seeks to bring justice to a community that has been dangerously exposed to toxic chemicals for decades. The post film panel will provoke lively discussion on the movie and this timely topic. Local Screening of the “Saving the Great Swamp” – Free

Registration is NOT required!    The "Saving the Great Swamp: Battle to Defeat the Jetport" Documentary will be shown at the MMT Library 6:30 PM: Doors open, 7 PM: Film Begins, 8 PM: Panel Discussion   In 1959, the Port Authority of New York announced plans to build a huge international jetport in the swamp. This “done deal” proposal, would have filled in the swamp, demolished 700 homes, and changed the landscape forever. But a small group of concerned citizens opposed the threat and won.  The award-winning one-hour documentary “Saving the Great Swamp,” tells the story of the events, people and politics behind the struggle to preserve this beautiful rural area between 1959 and 1968. USA Today called the film “a truly astonishing and entertaining history lesson” and it has aired nationally on PBS. The film will be shown at 7:00pm in the Meeting Room of the MMT Library and admission is free. Registration not required.
